I’ve recently had a wonderful few days in Arrowtown where our daughter Kate got married to Matt in the tussock over-looking Lake Wakatipu at Jack’s Point. As we unwound after 48 hours of celebrations, we managed to have two delicious meals in local Arrowtown eateries. One of them at @Smithy’s Smoke House at Millbrook Resort in the evening and the other at @Wet Jacket Cellar Door for brunch.
Smithy’s Smoke House – Arrowtown eateries
Huddled with a blanket over my legs, the flames in the teepee shaped fire-place danced, as we enjoyed the ambience of Millbrook’s new eatery. It’s a lovely part of the resort to have an intimate tapas snack or a night-cap.
The alfresco dining venue is open from 1.00pm to 10.30pm and has an impressive selection of whiskeys, but their wine list and other beverages are also excellent. The drinks are served from a quaint, small shack, in keeping with the historic past of Millbrook when the resort was a wheat farm and mill.
We managed to sample a good few of the tapas on the menu. Our dinner selection included Baked Potato Skins, Steamed Prawn and Pork Dumplings, a delicious Confit Duck Roti and Pork belly Bao Buns… not a lot of greens, but what the hell!
Wet Jacket Cellar Door
We were meeting up with the newlyweds so decided to have lunch at Wet Jacket. Ajoining the original wool shed that was once part of the Bendemeer Station, is a delightful grassed area with bean bags, chairs and a few table.
They have commandeered food trucks to complement Wet Jacket’s wines and craft beers. On the day we were there Chef Sam Campbell was cooking and what a treat it was. The boys had Pork Katsu Sandos sandwiches. The crumbed pork schnitzel was loaded with homemade kimichi, katsu sauce and QP mayo… absolutely sensational. For me, I went for the girl food and had a grain bowl with quinoa, brown rice, black wild rice, toasted buck wheat, plus chickpeas, eggplant, corn, feta and a delicious pomegranate dressing.
There was talk that Sam could be doing something a little more permanent at Wet Jacket so watch the space.
