The onsen in Queenstown beckons you.

The onsen in Queenstown beckons you.

One of the ‘must do’ activities in Queenstown is to visit the onsen at Arthur’s Point.

Its set in an idylic setting overlooking the Shotover River just 10 minutes from Queenstown. It’s the perfect relaxation after skiing or in fact any time of the day or evening as it’s opene ot 10pm at night.

Bookings are recommended during the ski season and especially at sunset, but as we were out of luck we opted for a sunrise onsen instead.

Up early in the half-light we started our journey down the steps to the onsen. Through the trees the path is beautifully lit with LED lighting. Inside the newly refurbished lounge we chose our refreshments; snacks and a choice of an alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverage.
All 10 pools are all private so you can enjoy the solitude and incredible views over the Shotover River. While the hot tubs can be enclosed the front window and roof retract leaving the pool cantilevered over the river.

The experience was magical as steam rose from the river, but we did not see the sun as the clouds blanketed the mountains. If you want to further indulge book in for a 60 minute massage or treatment to you liking following the onsen.

Water quality

For anyone concerned about the water quality it comes from the mountains so is some of New Zealand’s finest. They maintain the pristine state of the water by bombarding it with high intensity ultraviolet rays. This eliminates the need for the chlorine, however, if required bromine is added. The water is constantly replaced, 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

I think the Queenstown owner had done a wonderful job of offering a unique kiwi twist to a Japanese tradition.
