Salmon fishing at its best

In Wanaka is ‘Hook’. A lake to plate salmon fishing farm, where the experience for any young people is second to none. I wanted a real, hands on fishing experience for my grandson Brooklyn, in the hope he will one day be a keen fly fisherman.

Brooklyn patiently waiting for a salmon to bite.

At Hook, it’s easy. In the spring-fed lake, you get a rod and all the gear (bait and berley) for $10, then pay $35kg for the salmon you catch.

With a couple of handfuls of berley, it didn’t take long to catch one.

With our salmon in the bucket, we relaxed, had lunch in the restaurant while the team prepared our fish. We could have had sashimi salmon, or pan-fried for lunch, but Brooklyn opted to have it filleted and taken home to cook for his Mum and Dad.

It would be hard to beat a day like this, for a keen, young fisherman.
